In order for a message to be understood by the other party exactly as intended, it must be communicated to them verbally. You can improve your verbal communication abilities by using the following techniques.

  • Verify that the other person is listening to you. When you have something important to say to someone, make sure you have their attention by calling them by name and making eye contact before you speak.

  • Maintain order. Have a purpose for your speech, and organize it accordingly. Consider your words before you speak, and present your ideas and information clearly.

  • Use pronouns beginning with “I,” such as “I feel,” “I need,” or “I would like.” Since “I” statements place the emphasis on your sentiments, are less accusatory, and elicit less defensiveness, they help the other person comprehend your point of view rather than feeling attacked.

  • Speak clearly so the audience can comprehend. Steer clear of jargon, slang, complicated language, etc. Speak in a way that is acceptable for the other person’s age, sex, and emotional state.

  • Be truthful. Express your feelings honestly and politely. Consider this as an opportunity to introduce yourself to the other person during the chat.

  • Be precise and impartial. Decide what the current problem is and how it makes you feel. Avoid using sweeping terms like “always,” “ever,” or “never.” Remain on topic; avoid veering off into general personality issues or bringing up earlier difficulties.

  • Be positive. Think about the good things about the other person. Be specific, considerate, and open while appreciating someone. Make sure that the number of compliments exceeds the number of criticisms.

  • React, but do not retaliate. Be respectful, composed, and upbeat. Take a little break from the conversation if it is turning angry. Establish a time for the conversation to restart and stick to it.

  • Aim to settle conflicts rather than win them. If you are unable to reach an agreement straight away, pause and decide when you will try again. Try to find a solution, but be aware that you might occasionally need to accept failure.
